  22. Who are The Association of C & C++ Users?

  25. ACCU is a community of people with an interest in the C family of programming
  26. languages.  This family includes:
  27.  
  28.     o   K&R C
  29.     o   ISO-C (a.k.a. ANSI-C)
  30.     o   C++
  31.  
  32. The community includes professional programmers, the suppliers of compilers, and
  33. those who are 'just interested' in the languages.  ACCU members are using C and
  34. C++ on a wide range of platforms - UNIX, DOS, OS/2, CP/M - home computers, PCs,
  35. workstations and super-computers.

  37. Although the organisation is based in the UK, the membership is worldwide.
  38. There are members in the US, mainland Europe, Russia, the Middle East and
  39. Australia.

  52.     o   Monitoring of (and involvement in) the standardisation efforts of

  59. What does The Association of C & C++ Users do?

  62. Its primary aim is to provide support for members - this takes a number of
  63. forms.

  65. o C Vu
  66. ~~~~~~
  67. Our bi-monthly journal C Vu contains reviews of software and books, articles,
  68. opinions and news.  The material covers a wide range of experience - from novice
  69. to expert - and a wide variety of interests.
  70.  
  71. A supplementary diskette which accompanies each issue is available.  This
  72. contains source code relating to the articles and a variety of other 'goodies'.

  74. o Handbook (and directory of members)

  76. Published annually, this provides each member with:
  77.     o   A copy of the constitution.
  78.     o   Contact information for members of the committee.
  79.     o   Contact information for experts willing to help you with problems.
  80.     o   Details of discounts and special relationships with suppliers.
  81.     o   An index of books reviewed in C Vu.
  82.     o   A list of members.

  84. o Tutorials

  86. The ACCU runs a series of one or two day weekend workshop tutorials which are
  87. led by experts and provided at a minimal cost (typical price 15 pounds sterling
  88. per day).  Example topics are: "Exploring the Standard C Library", "Introduction
  89. to C++" and "C++ Coding Standards".

  91. o Digest of book reviews
  92. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  93. Over 650 books have been reviewed in C Vu, at least 85% of which relate directly
  94. to C and/or C++.  A diskette containing the text of all of these reviews is
  95. available to members at a small cost.

  97. o C++ Special Interest Group
  98. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  99. A Special Interest Group concentrating on C++ publishes its own journal
  100. Overload, which comes with a supplementary diskette.  It includes articles on
  101. topics as widely varied as compiler reviews, C++ standardisation progress
  102. reports, object-oriented and C++ programming techniques, and interviews with
  103. prominent people in the C++ "world".

  105. o The C Acorn User Group
  106. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  107. Another Special Interest Group is dedicated to those interested in the use of C
  108. and C++ on RISC OS platforms.  It supports the use of the Easy C/C++, Desktop
  109. C/C++ and GCC compilers as well as the RISC_OSLib and DeskLib libraries through
  110. a bi-monthly 16+ page journal - CAUGers.  The main RISC OS compiler suppliers,
  111. Acorn and Beebug, are both members of this SIG.

  113. o ISO Standards Development Forum
  114. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  115. Those interested in the C and C++ standardisation processes may join the ISO
  116. Standards Development Forum.  The ACCU provides these members with access to
  117. current standardisation material and a bi-yearly standards briefing letter.
  118. The supplement includes a donation to a fund that provides assistance to those
  119. attending standardisation meetings.  You can affect the way that your
  120. programming language develops!

  122. o Services Under Development
  123. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  124. Other services are currently under development.  These include:
  125.     o   Other SIGS with their own additional magazines or newsletters.
  126.     o   Software Database of information about tools, utilities, libraries etc.
  127.           of interest to C/C++ users.
  128.     o   National Agents to help establish active groups in other countries.
  129.           Germany already has one.

  132. How much does it cost to join?
  133. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  135. The ACCU is a non-profit making organisation that is run by volunteers - you
  136. only pay for the production of the journals and disks, and administration costs.
  137. As an example, the cost of basic membership for the 1994/95 year is 14 pounds
  138. sterling for individuals.  Students may join at a reduced rate, and
  139. organisations may join at a corporate rate, which confers several advantages.
  140. Membership of the SIGs costs extra, for example in 1994/95 it costs 5 pounds
  141. sterling to join the C Acorn User Group and 15 pounds sterling to join the C++
  142. SIG.
